Neuro-Linguistic Programming has its origin in the speculative wondering of Richard Bandler and John Grinder: This led to two questions: "Is it possible to identify the differences, which make the difference between excellence and the lack of it?" and "If so, can we make these differences teachable and learnable to enhance life experience for everyone?"

THE FOUNDERS OF NLP

Richard BANDLER and John GRINDER

In 1972, At the Santa Cruz University in California, Richard Bandler, then a student at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and John Grinder, then an Assistant Professor of linguistics, motivated by a mutual questioning, of how effective people perform and accomplish things. They were especially interested in the possibility of being able to duplicate the behavior, and therefore the competence, of these highly effective individuals. In short, they set out to "model" human excellence.

Three decades ago, the originators of NLP answered both questions with a resounding "Yes!".

They observed meticulously, the work of expert therapists renowned for the quality of the results they obtained. Fritz Perls, father of the “Gestalt Therapy”, Virginia Satir, founder of family therapy, and Milton Erickson, creator of Ericksonian Hypnosis.

The idea was to observe and decode how these professionals those were so successful in their fields, and to find the constants in what worked so well and then decode their precise strategy, into reproducible models.

The premise was simple, but the results were extremely powerful. The decoding of the subjective structure, of highly performing know-how, has permitted the elaboration of a series of models designed to transfer competencies personally, to others, and create the foundation of this world-wide renowned discipline.

What emerged from their work came to be called Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Over the next three years Grinder and Bandler continued to model the various cognitive behavioral patterns of these therapists, which they published in their books The Structure of Magic Volumes I & II (1975, 1976), Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, Volumes I & II (1975, 1977) and Changing With Families (1976). These books became the foundation of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
